Katrina stuff
Aside from our own personal donations, we are doing some other
things to help the Katrina victims. Natural disasters suck.
This one is shaping up to be the worst in our history. And certainly
in every musician’s mind right now is the feeling that
a treasured part of our American musical culture may now be
lost forever.
So, next Thursday we’ll be appearing in a benefit at
the River in Rancho Mirage with a number of other artists. CDs
from the entire concert will be available, with proceeds going
to benefit the hurricane victims. The lineup for this concert
is still being finalized, but what we have so far will be posted
on our webpage (www.emith.com/gigs) and on our myspace page
(www.myspace.com/emith). So far it includes: The Jeff Eaton
Band from San Francisco, House of Broken Promises (San Berdoo),
The Barflys, Matt Lowell, Don Teschner (of Rod Stewart fame),
Courtney Chambers, Daisy Connor/Paul Badel, Jar of Tadpoles,
VJ Hume (Harp), Marty Steel, Michael Anthony Perna (former musical
director for the academy awards), and John Stanley King.
Also, along with thousands of other artists, we are donating
the proceeds of CD’s purchased on CD Baby (www.cdbaby.com)
to the hurricane victims. If you wanted to pick up an emith
CD and haven’t had the opportunity to do so, consider
doing so now. You can go straight to the emith page at www.cdbaby.com/emith,
or read all about on the front page at CDbaby.
If you need more ideas on how to help:
-Consider donating directly to organizations like America’s
Second Harvest (www.americassecondharvest.org),
Americares (www.americares.org),
the Red Cross (www.redcross.org),
Operation USA (www.operationusa.org),
or others.
-Airlines such as American and United are
offering incentive miles in addition to your cash donation,
so if that’s what gets you going, dig in. American even
lets you do it retroactively: Click this link for more info:
http://www.aa.com/content/images/eSummary/Partner_Offer_Pages/AAdvantage/Images/HurricaneButtonSept05.htm
-Go on craigslist (www.craigslist.org)
and learn how to help individuals directly – you can send
prepaid cell phones, basic toiletries & clothes, donate
plane tickets, provide a room for someone, anything you can
think of.
-KPFK (www.kpfk.org)
is organizing a Caravan of Hope which will depart the
LA area on Sep. 15th, and drive all donated items directly
to New Orleans. You can donate water, toiletries, food, diapers,
baby formula, whatever, at two locations in the LA area, and
be assured that it will be personally delivered by the station
manager of KPFK, who will be accompanying the caravan.
Tour wrap-up
It’s tough to write about this in the wake of Katrina.
But, we had a lovely tour of the West in the past few weeks,
during which we played 9 cities in 11 days and drove over 3,267
miles. That’s pretty much the length of the whole country,
although we went in a big circle. Okay, so maybe more like a
triangle. You get the picture. And then we got back to find
gas at $3.25 a gallon. Mmmm, that will put a dent in the touring
style.
We met many new friends, took many pictures, had some great
experiences, and can’t wait to get back. We also got some
great press write-ups – check it out on our website.
We will also have a LIVE recording of the set we did as openers
for the Steve Kimock Band, available only to you, our mailing
list folks! So let us know if you want more info about that.
Have any pictures you’d like to share with us? Let us
know and we’ll put them up!
Our final itinerary was: Las Vegas (only 85 degrees! ???) –
Moab (where we ran into my friend from DC’s father who
we also knew in San Francisco (???) because he had to go to
the bathroom – go figure) – Denver (where Stevie
dropped off his guitar body to get refinished by one of the
nation’s finest) – Arvada (where we crashed a 20th
high school reunion after our show, mu ha ha ha) – State
Bridge (a location that exists only to support jam bands in
the summer, and hunters in the winter, and is a mighty beautiful
and fun destination) – Paonia (how many towns do you know
whose economy is based on both coal mining and organic fruit
farming and has four fully disparate climates within 20 miles
in each direction?) – Vail (we blew a week’s worth
of money on one four-star meal…yeesh) – Salt Lake
City (our hosts got married dressed up as Vampires) –
Elko (a town that’s grown from population 3 to population
80,000, in gold mining) – Reno (where we got in a huge
fight with the hotel over someone being too lazy to deal with
required paperwork, and then played a great gig because we were
so pissed off).
You can see photos here: www.emith.com/photos.html.
Upcoming local dates (see the gig
page for the updated list of dates)
We have two dates planned right now, and they are both in LA,
on two Mondays, September 26 (Genghis Cohen) and October 10th
(Cat Club). So pencil that in, LA’ers, and come on out.
Sep. 26th is with Mark Goldenberg, “the Shaquille O’Neal
of popular guitar” according to Don Was, who will be playing
songs from his solo fingerstyle guitar album. Mark’s been
helping us with some of our recordings and is really a stunning
player. It will be a double-header starting at 8pm.
The Cat Club deal is “Acoustic Mondays” and they
are starting to get a little scene going, so come on down and
check that one out, and plan to stick around and see who else
is playing as well.
We might squeeze a few local Borders gigs in as well, to be
determined.
Upcoming tour dates
Next tour plans: We’ve gotten emails from many people:
When are you going to play here? When are you going to play
there? Timbuktu to Tadjikistan, we’ve got you’ve
covered. Okay, maybe some other places closer to home.
We plan to hit Salt Lake again and hopefully Park City just
before Halloween. Still making arrangements.
Then we plan to head up the West Coast for the first week in
November. SF, Mendo/Ft. Bragg again, coastal Oregon/Washington,
and back down a little inland.
In the winter, we are going back to the mountains. Yummy. Park
City, Vail, Mammoth, Tahoe. Mmmmmmm fresh pow-pow.
In the late winter-spring, we’ll be looking at the East
Coast again, particularly Florida and the southeast. Yeah, we’re
California weather wimps, we can’t stand the cold unless
it’s #3 above (fresh pow-pow).
This
is all totally subject to change. Why are we telling you now?
Because now is your chance to lobby for a venue if there is
somewhere you would like to see us play! We need lead time on
planning.
Photos
We have pixsctures! Not just of us (and anyone we could rope
into getting photographed with us), but also some absurdly gorgeous
visions of landscapes. If you would like high-resolutions versions
of any of the pictures for your viewing pleasure, let us know
and that can be arranged.
Here’s one of my favorites:
If you have pictures you’d like to see on the site, send
‘em our way & we’ll post ‘em. If you want
copies of our pictures, let us know & we’ll send ‘em.
T-shirts
Dude, we got, like, rock and roll T-shirts. Our tour friends
were the first to see them! Would you like to purchase one?
We currently have S-M-L-XL, but quantities of each size are
definitely limited. $12 for the shirt, and (such a deal!) $15
for a shirt and a CD. ...they may be purchased HERE
Check out Zach sporting one here:
And that’s it for now! Whew!
